Kids’ Healthy Chocolate Smoothie

My girls are big fans of anything chocolatey. I guess they got it from their *ehem* parents.

Yes, too much chocolatey stuff ain’t good, but I found a great way to make it healthy for my girls. It’s actually my favourite way to get my girls to eat their greens!

Behold, my girls’ favourite healthy chocolate smoothie!



This smoothie is packed with protein, vitamins and fiber which is great for growing kids. Best part is, they don’t even know there’s veggie inside! Baby spinach is totally flavourless and all they can taste is the yummy chocolate smoothie.

Here’s what you need to make this Healthy Chocolate Smoothie:






1 cup MARIGOLD UHT Full Cream Milk
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1-2 tbsp pure honey or pure maple syrup
1/4 cup oats
1 medium ripe banana (frozen banana is even better)
1/2 cup baby spinach
Ice cubes

Place everything into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve!




This smoothie is really delicious and nutritious. The MARIGOLD UHT milk really adds creaminess to it. It’s also rich in calcium, protein and their unique formulation which contains Vitamin D, helps with your child’s growth and health. My girls don’t like to drink plain milk on its own, so making smoothie is one of the ways to add milk in their diet, besides with cereal.

My Scar Story

I was one of those “unfortunate” people who got their chicken pox just a couple of weeks before entering a new phase of my life – starting university. I was 18 at that time. 18!

It all started when my youngest sister (who was in form 2) caught the chicken pox from her classmate, which she later “passed it down” to my second sister, who then passed it down to me. According to an article I read, getting chicken pox from a sibling is a lot worse than getting it from someone else – it has something to do with stronger dose of virus.

Anddd the child who gets it second or third usually will get a worse case. So can you imagine how extremely bad my chicken pox case was? I was 18 (no longer a child, which means the symptoms are worse), I got it from my siblings anddd, I was the third one to get it. Thanks a lot, sisters.

Not only did I have more pox on my entire body and face as compared to my sisters, but my pox were infected as well. I had to go to two different doctors for treatments and an injection. My pox were bigger, bernanah (purulent), with black-ish ring. It was so nasty, especially the ones on my face. I have never felt so ugly in my life; I seriously thought I looked like “katak puru”. I couldn’t even look myself in the mirror. God knows how incredibly down I felt at that time.

It took 2 weeks for me to heal from the chicken pox, but the scars were still there, all big and reddish all over my face. I wanted to wait until the scars were all gone before starting my university, but my mom insisted that I go because the orientation week was over (yeap, I missed it) and she didn’t want me to miss my first day of class. Plus, scars may take months or even years to heal especially for adults.

I still remember my first day in university. Thanks to my chicken pox scars, I had very low self-esteem. People looked at me as if I was some kind of a “disease” (or at least that’s how I felt) and I didn’t want to talk or meet anyone. I was so self-conscious of my face. I know it’s just chicken pox, but it was the worst kind and that was one of the worst moments in my life.

My scars were mostly gone after about 5 months or so. It felt like forever tho! Alhamdulillah, my skin is now clear from all those nasty scars, except for the ones on my forehead – two of them, to be exact. They are not as deep as they were 14 years ago and they might not be that obvious in photos, but they are still there.

Now every time I see those scars on my forehead, I am reminded of that awful time and I wish none of my kids will ever experience that. It’s not just the pain and itchiness, but scars can also cause distressing psychological effects which can result in low self-esteem, especially if it’s on the face where everybody can see it.

There are actually ways to minimize scars, and the most affordable and easiest way is to use a topical product. I remember during the first couple of years of getting that chicken pox scars, I religiously applied vitamin E based creams on my face every day as I read vitamin E helps to heal scars, especially fresh ones.

Now there’s Bio-Oil, which not only helps to improve the appearance of scars, but also stretch marks, uneven skin tone, as well as ageing and dehydrated skin. Bio Oil contains plant extracts such as chamomile, lavender, rosemary and calendula oils, together with vitamins A and E. I have always dreamed of having long, luscious, bouncy locks instead of my fine, unruly and just plain old blah hair. I swear my hair has a mind of its own. It just won’t stay still! Remember the AIG Pledge for Tomorrow contest?
Well, I managed to fulfill it!

My mom is a really good cook (and I’m not just saying that because she’s my mom – she really is!), and she had been wanting to pass down her cooking skills and recipes to me ever since I graduated university. I think I have only managed to learn about 3 recipes from her (I was a little busy back then; you know, what with work, then got married and have kids. I just couldn’t find the time) – and that is why for this AIG contest, I pledged to cook with my mom and have meals together. Better late than never!

Anyways, we spent last weekend at my parents’ place after about 3 weeks of not seeing them. The only time we are able to visit them is on the weekend and public/school holidays. But it depends on our schedules too. Sometimes my parents are away on outstation trips (my dad is a busy man) or sometimes we have things to settle, so we had to postpone our visit to a later date. It’s a good thing my parents live only 30 minutes drive away from us!

They were both at home last weekend, so we decided to come over for lunch. We came a little bit early so I could help my mom to prepare my favourite dishes, just like old times. We made lauk kampung, and mom taught me the step-by-step – from the ingredient preparations to cooking them. (Now I know why my sambal tumis always didn’t turn out good – should have waited until “naik minyak” before adding the air asam jawa! Hehe).

IMG_5926Our lunch spread: Ayam goreng berempah, masak lemak tempoyak pucuk ubi, sambal tumis udang, kerabu taugeh, ikan masin and ikan bakar with kuah asam. Soooo delicious, I had 3 plates of rice!



The girls were excited too. They are always excited to come to their Atok and Wan’s place. So manja, especially with my mom. Sheeshhh! #noimnotjealous 😛

We talked and laughed at dinner, updated each other about whatever that’s happening in our lives. It felt good to hang out and spend time with them. Even tho we text like every day on our family Whatsapp group, it still feel more special when you actually see and talk in person.
